How I make Socks

I have had people ask me how to make socks. Well here is how I make basic socks.

I don't check my gauge like they say. I look at the yarn I am going to use, and when it says for example 5 stitches per inch on size 6 needle then I use that as my guide. I know how wrong it is not to check your gauge, but nobody knits the same.

Okay here is how I make socks

With whatever yarn I am using for example the yarn I am using right now is 5 stitches per inch on size 6 needle. So that means to me for my big foot I would have to Cast On 36 stitches

I divide 36 stitches between 3 double pointed needles.( 12-12-12) I join making sure I don't twist the stitches.

For 2 inches I knit 2, purl 1 rib
to end the cuff, I purl around 1 row.

I knit the rest of the rows for 3-4 inches then I make the Heel Flap

Round 1. slip 1 knit to the end
Round 2. slip 1 purl to the end
I do this for about 16 rows and I end on knit row

Then I decrease buy knit 1 slip, slip knit. knit to last 3 then knit 2 together and knit 1.
next round I purl 1 purl 2 together, purl to last 3 then purl 2 together and purl 1.

I do this until there are 4 stitches left on the needle.

Next I knit across and pick up the stitches on the side.( this would be needle #1) don't for get the stitch in between needle 1 and 2.
Needle # 2 knit across
With needle #3 I pick up the stitches on the other side. ( Pick up the stitch in between needle #2.)
then I knit across needle #1 after I picked up the stitches for needle #3 I divide the stitches evenly between needle #1 and #3.

I start to decrease to get back to original amount of stitches.

Round 1.
Needle #1 knit to last 3, knit 2 together then knit 1.
Needle #2 knit 1 slip, slip knit. knit to last 3, knit 2 together knit 1
Needle #3 knit 1 slip, slip knit, knit to the end

Round 2. knit across the 3 needles.
repeat these two rounds until you have 12 stitches on the 3 needles

Knit to fit your foot. I always try on the sock to see how long it is.

Now for the toe part.

I start to decrease when the foot part of the sock is covering my little toe

Round 1.
Needle #1 slip, slip knit. knit to last 3, then knit 2 together knit 1
Needle #2 slip, slip knit. knit to last 3, then knit 2 together knit 1
Needle #3 slip, slip knit. knit to last 3, then knit 2 together knit 1
Round 2. knit across evenly

I do this until there are 4 stitches left on each needle.
I cut the yarn about 6 inches long and with the tapestry needle I take the 4 stitches off each needle and put tight I weave the yarn in to close.

So that is how I make a sock. I know it is way different than how most people do it. I guess I have to be different.
