I have been thinking about home schooling Makayla. Am I crazy? I know it will take some patients on my end, but I think I can do it. She is not doing so well in school. She is a social butterfly when she is there. She gets to distracted and doesn't finish her work. Plus she has the "ants in the pants" syndrome.
I just want her to do better in school. All I see every Friday is, all the work she has done through out the week, and it is awful. Some things they do together in class and she still gets things all messed up. I don't want her to get behind in school and be held back. I know she is very smart. Hell last year they wanted to skip her to second grade! Right out of kindergarten to second grade. I told them no. This was the first year she would be in school all day and I didn't want to over whelm her.
I know she will miss all of her friends. But I think learning is more important right now. She is at the beginning of her school life. The girl needs to learn, before she worries about so and so. I have been working with her every night for two or more hours with her work. I have been trying to get her to work on her spelling and reading. I also give her math problems. She does fine for me, but when it comes to school, she" forgets" things.
I just want to do the right thing. I don't want to mess her up, buy taking her out of school. But if it comes down to her having to be in the "special class", because she is being lazy and doesn't want to do her work, then I would rather teach her myself.
I can't get her to change her mind set from being lazy. I used to do the same shit when I was in school. But I don't have a clue as to what I can do or say to get her to use her brain. Plus we are getting ready to move and I don't want to plop her into a new school in the middle of the school year. I guess I am at a cross roads right now. I will have to ponder on it for a while. If any of you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free.

my mom pulled us out from 2nd and 4th grade. my bro was in "remedial classes b/c the only focused on the kids who didnt need help. i had an 8th grade reading level and they put my in remedial reading b/c i came part way thru the year in 2nd grade and once stuck in a reading group you could neveer get out.
you need to find out the state laws, and a homeschool support group in your area so they can answer your questions, tell you about teir co-ops, feild trips, and fun groups for the kids. there are so many styles of homeschooling, dont be afraid to find what works best for you. you are her mother, you know her better than someone paid to teach 30 kids.

No! Your not crazy! :) I started homeschooling my oldest son when he started 1st grade (he's now in 6th) and I started teaching my little one K this year. I really enjoy the homeschool life. In most areas there are a lot of homeschool groups that have lots of activities, plus there are activities for homeschoolers through museums, parks, YMCA and about every where else. It can be almost overwhelming how much you can find to do with your child. Since your about to move, it would be a perfect time to try it out, since she's going to have to switch schools anyways. It sounds like she is really struggling, so it's very doubtful you would do a worse job (most homeschoolers actually excel), so I would think the worse case scenario would be, you don't like it and you have to start her in the new school. I don't know what part of Ohio you are from, but I live near Dayton. I'd love to give you more information if you are interested.

I don't use a program, I use a verity
of things. That is what works best for us. I felt going through a program was too restrictive, but that's just my opinion. I know there are a lot of homeschoolers who use it with success. Becareful of using it if it is through a free charter school, because the rules are different and you are not actually a homeschooler, but a charter school student. Some homeschool groups do not allow charter school students in the group because they are unsure of legal entanglements. Some of the various groups in our area (Dayton): South Dayton- HUGS- at the moment they do not have actual meeting but a lot of the moms gather at gym time at the Payne Rec Center. They also have monthly fieldtrips. South Dayton Christian Homeschoolers has monthly support meeting, mom's night out, field trips. I believe there is also a group that meets in Oakwood, but I don't remember the details. I'm pretty sure they had a 4H club. I could probably find out if you were interested. Also south of town- Payne Rec Center (Moraine) has a weekly gym day on Tuesday. At least one of the libraries has a homeschool day (I think WC, but I'm not sure) there is a chess club that meets at Miamisburg Library two Mondays out of the month. East of Dayton (Xenia)there is a very large group that meets (and has lots of activities) called PEACH. North of Dayton- Group- North Dayton Area Homeschoolers- I think they meet at the Englewood YMCA once a month, plus do a verity of activities. A good size group meets at First Baptist of Vandalia- they have Rec day once a month, a monthly support group meeting, and field trips for the kids. Area Wide- Several of the YMCA's have swim and gym, there are some skating rinks that have monthly skate parties, the Metro Parks have a lot of activities. There are other things going on too, but that is all I can think of at the moment. I have found homeschool blogs a good source of information and please feel free to ask me more questions.
